A Little Bit of Germany Down Under
May 25th 2006 13:15
I heard on the radio yesterday that at World Cup stadiums in Germany the only beer available is the ghastly Budweiser and the food will be McDonalds. Not only that, but the beer would be non-alcoholic! This is despite Germany having arguably one of the best beer ranges in the world. Germany has a purity law that means beer cannot have preservatives in it – just the hops and malt and sugar. That’s the way I brew at home, so it must be good!
Anyhow, with this in mind, my suggestion is to remain in Australia. Some of my mates are going to the World Cup in Germany, but with Budweiser on tap, I refuse to be jealous. Instead, why not watch the games from a German pub in Australia. You’ll get your German beer in huge 1 L Steins, some German food and then you can stagger home to your own bed, avoiding English hoolies and escaping the dreaded hostel – unless that is you are backpacking around Australia!
On Saturday night I went to a certain Bavarian Restaurant and Bar in Manly that would give you your German fix. Though unusually set up – it should have kept its bar and restaurant a little more separate, it served nice German beers in 1L and 500 ML steins. Good beer that stayed surprisingly cold for their size – although it was a cold night. Expensive as well unfortunately at 17 bucks a Litre. That’s half a case of Reschs.
In the Rocks, Sydney, there is also Lowenbrau Keller. Though I will admit I haven’t been there, I have had many high recommendations plus it is in the perfect part of town. For those not in the biggest city in Australia, I may explore some non-Sydney German locations in future blogs.
