Balmain Sydney
June 27th 2006 15:31
Sydney is somewhat of a transient town. Many people don’t see it as a place to settle, but come and live here for a few years and then move on, usually to somewhere more affordable. Many of the people who do settle in inner Sydney either bought while property was a bit cheaper or have serious money. The rest of the population are renting or visiting.
This property boom has really changed the makeup of many suburbs in Sydney. Balmain, like many other suburbs, was very a working class suburb, but isn’t any longer. That said, it is a nice place to visit.
The best thing about Balmain is obviously its location. Located on Sydney’s harbourside, it is a good place to have a bbq or picnic or an excellent place to watch the local cricket in summer.
Luckily, enough the pubs still provide some sort of throwback to the old days. There are your trendy bars, but also a large variety to cater for many tastes. The Unity Hall is quite a popular spot, offering live swing and jazz during the week. Pubs like the Dry Dock and Sir William Wallace have great character and shouldn’t be overlooked in favour of a shitty place like the Monkey Bar.
Darling Street is the main hub of Balmain. It is a long street packed with pubs, restaurants – some reasonably priced, people and atmosphere. It isn’t especially easy to get to – the ferry or bus is your best option as parking is a bit of a nightmare.
I like going to Balmain, but I wouldn’t stay there. I’d visit it for the day or go there for a night out.
