Bathurst 1000
August 1st 2006 09:52
Looking at the schedule of events in Australia and I couldn’t overlook the great motor race held in Bathurst every year. This year’s event will be held on October 5th to 8th and if you want tickets for the grandstands, then you will want to get in quick because tickets are selling fast as they traditionally do.
Bathurst is really the big Australian motor race. The Holden Vs Ford battle remains fierce down under and this battle of the V8s has the most prestige of any race on the calendar. Camping is available in the vicinity of Mount Panorama, though that is selling fast too.
Bathurst itself is 207 kms west of Sydney and has a population that gives it the Australian title of a city. It is the home of Charles Sturt University and has a long tradition. The city’s size means facilities and accommodation are more than apt for handling the influx of people for the V8 race. The big race will be how many know the city and I can’t write a blog about the race without dropping the name of Peter Brock who has won the race the most times since 1963 at 9 times. The man is a legend of the race and a legend in the eyes of Holden fans. Jim Richards should also get a mention here having won the race a very impressive 7 times.
I don’t get excited when the new Holden is unveiled, nor do I call myself a car enthusiast – I can’t even drive, but I quite like the Bathurst 1000 and I could see myself going along one day.
