Is Bulli the new Byron?

April 11th 2007 05:31
I am down in the Wollongong suburb of Bulli at the moment and have noticed a change. In the past I think few outside of the Gong would have been familiar with this little suburb at the bottom of the escarpment. That is slowly changing, in large part to the Bulli Heritage Hotel, which tends to be another place touring musicians can add to their itinerary. So Bulli gets mentioned quite a bit on Sydney radio or probably or wider radio in lists of tour dates as such.

Bulli, though next to suburbs of Thirroul, Austinmer, Coledale and Stanwell Park, has not really had the residing artists those other suburbs has. It is a great beach suburb, but the people are more like their southern neighbours - working class, but not artsy or overly environmental.

That seems to be changing and I think will change even more with the ever growing amount of national and overseas folk and blues artists coming to the suburb. Easter Sunday even saw the first of a monthly market at the showground. So perhaps we will see the coastal suburb become a bit like Byron - home to art and music, without the hippies...

Hi Glen,

I haven't been to Bulli in years. I used to go all the time as a kid - picnics with the family. Spent many an afternoon at Stanwell Park - almost drowning at the beach or swimming in the river/lake? Watching hang gliders at Stanwell Tops.

Going to the blowhole at Bulli was cool.

Rock pools at Kiama were cool too.

Minnimurra Falls - that was a nice walk to see the water fall.

Wow, Glen, bringing back to childhood memories.

I'll have to revisit.

Love & stuff
Mrs M

Glad to help you re-live your memories Mrs M. Will have to correct you on the blowhole - it's in Kiama not Bulli. Also Kiama is a good 45 minutes from me here in Bulli.
