Glebe

I am sticking to inner-city suburbs at the moment, what with St Kilda and Newtown being my last two blogs. Personally I like inner city suburbs, there is usually a vibrancy that is quite attractive – a bit more culturally dynamic. There is a place for a laid back atmosphere, but sometimes you need a bit more action.
Glebe is another former working class town and the people that reside there are often those who bought when it was working class and have lived there for some time. Others have bought during its rise in popularity and surrounding that we have an increasing range of facilities to cater for the increase in disposable income in the region.
Glebe is one of the closest suburbs to the city, just round the corner from Sydney Central Station, but also just over the way from Pyrmont and Darling Harbour. Like Newtown’s King St, it is dominated by a main drag in Glebe Point Road which is a long drag that ends up at the lovely Jubilee Park and a part of the Sydney Harbour foreshore. This main drag has pubs, cafes, restaurants and coffee shops. Every Saturday it is also home to Glebe Markets, located on lower Glebe Point Road in the grounds of the Primary School. Glebe Markets is arguably the best markets in Sydney. Usually quite busy it has a number of stalls selling clothes, food, music and has live music on a regular basis.
Just off Glebe Point Road is the large Broadway Shopping Centre, which is your standard large shopping centre, though I must say, more favourable than other inner city ones. It houses amongst many shops, a cinema.
Being a former working class area, you have plenty of pubs. The Nags Head, The Friend In Hand and Casey’s are top establishment with a good range of beers with that back street pub feel.
Accommodation-wise you are close enough to the city for your large hotels or there are guest houses actually in Glebe. It is close enough by public transport to get to and from this great little suburb wherever in Sydney you are staying.
