Hobart - the capital of Tasmania

January 28th 2008 21:45
Hobart Tasmania

Hobart is the second oldest city in Australia and the capital of Tasmania with a population of 200,525 (Census 2006).

The city is nestled under Mt Wellington on the Derwent River and boasts a wonderful blend of built and cultural heritage along with a serene environment that promotes a low stress lifestyle for its residents. Hobart is a fantastic tourist destination with its sandstone architecture, unspoiled beaches (Nutgrove Beach, Lords Beach, Cornelian Bay Beach etc.) and great food and boutique wines including the famous Tasmanian salmon, crayfish and cheeses, raspberries and strawberries, beer and chocolates.

Residents enjoy an oceanic climate with the warmest months in January and February (ave. 21.6 degrees celsius) and the coolest in June and July at around 11 degrees celsius. Interestingly, Hobart has the second-lowest annual average rainfall of any Australian capital.

A must-go for any tourist is the Salamanca Place, renowned for the famous Salamanca Market - the home of fine Tasmanian arts and crafts. Showcasing the works of many of Tasmania's finest artists and craftspeople, the market is located amongst beautiful heritage listed sandstone buildings and tree lined streets

The area is also home to specialist food shops, bars, niche shopping and restaurants with an attractive river view during evening dining.

For those that enjoy their architecture, Port Arthur is a must-see with its most intact and evocative convict site in Australia. The Port Arthur Historic Site has more than 30 buildings, ruins and restored period homes, dating from the prison’s establishment in 1830 until its closure in 1877. During this time about 12,500 convicts served sentences and for many it was a living hell.
