Mackay is a tropical city located in the sunshine state of Queensland and is best known for producing one third of Australia's sugar exports with lush sugar cane fields still surrounding many areas.
The city's location on the eastern coastline means that it is blessed with a mammoth 31 beaches - all within short distance - plus several tropical islands within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Residents (around 73,000) of Mackay enjoy an average temperature of 24.7 °C throughout the year which makes the city ideal for the adventurous and outdoorsy holiday-maker with plenty of camping grounds, walking tracks, fishing and four-wheel drive expeditions on offer.
If you prefer to sit back, relax and soak in the beautiful sunshine and tropical climate, a trip to the city's many nearby islands such as Brampton Island and Keswick Island is a must.
The city also boasts a rich culture and heritage and the best places to explore this are Mackay's modern art gallery and the all new Artspace Mackay. This new regional art gallery and museum is operated by Mackay Regional Council and gives visitors access to a wide range of cultural services such as an ever-changing program of international standard touring and curated exhibitions of visual arts and social history.
The Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens is also one of the city's main tourist attractions with five feature ''cultural themed' gardens.
