Michael Jackson of Petersham Dies
July 31st 2006 12:14
Petersham is a lovely suburb in the innerwest of Sydney. It is home to both a large Portuguese population and Greek population. This is not only reflected by a lot of the people who make up the local community, but also restaurants and cafes along New Canterbury Rd. Some very fine eating.
It is also home to some other specialty shops. Down the Eastern end of Petersham, before Stanmore Rd becomes New Canterbury Rd, there is a party hire shop and there was a toy shop with one of the biggest collections of toys and film and TV memorabilia in Australia. The man who ran the shop was Michael Jackson. Okay so it wasn’t really Michael Jackson, but rather Richard Blackie, a Michael Jackson impersonator who had even had the surgery to get closer to the mark.
I had never been in this shop, but friends of mine had. They said it was quite creepy being served by Michael Jackson. The idea of being served by him kind of dampened my curiosity for the huge toy collection that had been built up for years.
Today I got a text from a friend to tell me to read an article on the Sydney Morning Herald Site that said Richard Blackie had killed himself. Pretty sad really. Okay so he sounded quite freakish, but apart from an innocent obsession there was nothing wrong with what he was doing – I’m sure many got a lot out of his collection. To make it sadder, no-one has claimed his body because it is likely he has no next of kin and with no will his collection is in the hands of a public trustee, which could easily lead to selling all his items off at auction.

Nothing strange about the man what so ever.
All obsessions look strange to the on-looker.
I always found fanatics of sport alot scarier than someone who is obsessed with collecting non-threatening objects.

I would be greatly honoured to make contact with others who are shocked, or at a loss because of Richard’s untimely death.

Even if you have only a little to share… I feel this man deserves to be preserved, as he has spent his life preserving his toys.
Thankyou.
