Newcastle music

I haven't left Newtown very much of late, but this afternoon I am heading to Newcastle to see The Strange Tenants and Backy Skank at the Cambridge Hotel.
Newcastle is 2 hours north of Sydney by car and a bit more by train (depending on what train you catch). It isn't a bad city, quite large and with some pretty top beaches.
We used to head up to this steel city to see bands quite often - at the tail end of quite a rich period in Newcastle music. I have to say now though it just isn't quite the same. I am not expecting a very big turnout tonight to be honest, which is a shame.
Newcastle was once a definite stop in the 1980s for touring Aussie bands. Now Newcastle is frequently skipped for the much more fruitful Byron Bay and when it isn't, it is usually stoppped at just to play Newcastle Uni. There is every chance this will turn around, but right now Newcastle doesn't have the same appeal it once did. Crowds aren't coming out and because of this, it will harder to attract quality bands.
