Dubbo NSW

Dubbo is a city in the Central West Region of New South Wales famous for its boutique wineries and recreational facilities. The city is one of the faster growing cities in Australia - the past 35 years has seen Dubbo grow from a population base of 20,629 in 1971 to nearly 40,000 in 2007.

Located around 400 km (4 hours drive) from the state capital of Sydney, Dubbo is at the cross-roads of New South Wales with roads up north to Brisbane, south to Melbourne, east to Sydney and Newcastle, and west to Broken Hill and Adelaide.

The city is proving to be a popular tourist destination simply because it has an abundance of things to do and see including popular annual events such as the National Ram Show, Dubbo Show, Dubbo National Steer Show and Dubbo City Eisteddfod.

Places of interest include the Dubbo Observatory, Garling Gallery, Jedda Boomerangs, Western Plains Cultural Centre, and a host of boutique wineries Boora Estate Wines, Red Earth Estate Vineyard and Tombstone Estate Vineyard & Rose Gardens.

However, Dubbo is best known for the famous Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Situated on a 300 hectare oasis of woodland and irrigated grassland, Western Plains Zoo first opened to the public in 1977 and was the first zoo in Australia to be constructed on the open range principle and also the first zoo to be built in Australia in 60 years.

Today, the zoo is home to more than 1000 animals which are kept in natural surroundings separated by moats and creeks rather than fences wherever possible. Australian animals roam in landscaped habitats and animals from five continents can meander through simulated natural environments.

Other must-see attractions include the Dubbo Museum, a gracious two-storey sandstone building with a cedar staircase, marble fireplaces and decorative ceilings, containing colonial farm, domestic, Aboriginal and commercial artefacts. To its rear is a collection of 19th-century buildings, which have been positioned to form a village square.

Lismore Australia

One of the reasons why Lismore is such a popular tourist attraction is because there's lots to see and do: from walking the trails in World Heritage rainforests to visiting country villages, browsing colourful art and craft markets and even retail therapy, you will find something for everyone here.

Firstly, the walking trails. Lismore is blessed in this department - it's on the doorstep of some of Australia's most significant World Heritage-listed reserves, spectacular National Parks and State Forests. A network of bushwalking trails throughout the parks - Mt Warning National Park, Nightcap National Parks, etc. - offer everything from gentle ten minute strolls to two-day hiking adventures.

Lismore NSW

The city is also littered with postcard-perfect villages - each with its own unique character - featuring antique and curio shops, galleries, tea houses and cafes.

For those into their art and culture, visit the historical society and check out the history of Lismore, plus a fascinating collection of aboriginal artefacts and pioneer relics including clothing, tools, furniture and handiwork. [visitlismore.com.au]

Bathurst

Bathurst NSW

Bathurst is a city in regional New South Wales, approximately 200km or two and a half hour drive from the state capital of Sydney. The city of 37,001 (Census 2005) residents is the oldest inland town in Australia thus boasts a rich history which is highlighted by its unique collection of house museums.

The city is a great place to visit due to a number of reasons: its relatively close proximity to Sydney, its great facilities including tourist attractions and annual events held throughout the year.

Bathurst NSW

Best known for the Mount Panorama motor racing circuit, this famous circuit is steeped in rich motorsport history and has helped put Bathurst on the world map. The racetrack is just over 6 kilometres long and is widely known to separate the men from the boys due to the high level of skill required to manoeuvre a racecar around the demanding and steep circuit.

In October each year, thousands of motorsport fanatics make the 'pilgrimage' to Bathurst for the annual Holden vs Ford battle in the V8 supercar race known as the Bathurst 1000.

Mount Panorama

Interestingly, the circuit is actually a public road thus it is open to the public on non-race days with cars allowed to travel in both directions around the circuit for no charge. A strict speed limit of 60 km/h is enforced.

Besides Mount Panorama, there are plenty of interesting places to see and visit in Bathurst and they are:

Abercrombie Caves - the most famous and largest natural arch in the southern hemisphere.

Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum - home of the internationally renowned Somerville Collection of rare fossils and minerals from Australia around the world.

National Motor Racing Museum - the history of motor racing in Australia can be seen here.

Bathurst Sheep & Cattle Drome - see what it is like in the rural areas of the Aussie Outback.

The name itself may not scream tourist attraction, but Newcastle is seeing a boom of sorts with the running aground of the huge coal carrier on Nobby's Beach. Lashing weather a couple of weeks ago left the coal ship in trouble on the reefs of one of Newcastle's main beaches. Since then people have flocked to see the carrier in its helpless state.

Newcastle is about two hours drive from Sydney, and this closeness has resulted in a huge number of people jumping in the car to see it. From all reports, certain vendors are doing better business than ever selling coffee and food to those getting their view of the somewhat rare sight
