Townsville is a north-eastern city in the state of Queensland and is often referred to as the 'capital' of North Queensland.
Its location in Queensland - adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef - gives the city a dry tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The city's 169,484 residents (as at June 30, 2007) enjoys relatively warm weather throughout the year with December, January and February being the hottest months of the year with temperatures ranging from mid 20s to low 30s degrees celsius.
Townsville's biggest drawcard is its rich hinterland of tropical rainforests and waterfalls which plays host to a stunning array of outdoor recreational activities such as diving sites, beaches and parks.
Two of the more popular diving sites are "The Moltke" and Adrenalin Dive which boasts spectacular views of artefacts, marine life and variety of corals that cover the wrecks.
The most famous of the region’s National Parks is the Hinchinbrook Island National Park, which includes Hinchinbrook Channel and Island, the world's largest national park island and home of the internationally acclaimed "Thorsborne Trail".
Other popular tourist attractions include the world renowned Reef HQ - the world's largest living coral reef aquarium - and the Billabong Sanctuary which features some of Australia's most fascinating native wildlife.
Being a cosmopolitan city, Townsville also boasts an array of world class cafes, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, casino and shops thus making it a fantastic holiday destination for both outdoorsy types and shoppers alike.
