Wollongong - the City of Innovation
December 10th 2007 21:00
Located on the East coast of Australia, just south of metropolitan Sydney is the city of Wollongong - New South Wales' third largest city (behind Sydney and Newcastle) and Australia’s ninth largest with a population approaching 200,000.
Situated on a narrow coastal strip bordered by the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south, the Tasman Sea to the east and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west, the city enjoys a magnificent natural environment ranging from rainforests to spectacular sea cliffs and unspoilt beaches.
Due to its location and mild climate where average summer and winter temperatures are between 18-26 and 8-17 degrees celsius respectively, the district is an increasingly sought after getaway for frazzled city dwellers.
Wollongong's diverse range of recreational opportunities including adventure sports and its 17 patrolled beaches and cultural attractions such as Illawarra Museum, Science Centre and Planetarium and Illawarra Motoring Museum makes it a thoroughly enjoyable tourist destination.
Illawarra Museum
The Illawarra Museum provides an entertaining and highly informative insight into the earliest part of the city's history. With rooms filled with artifacts from the past, the museum also features three specially themed exhibitions including an air raid shelter, stockman's hut and historic classroom.
